The ice of Baikal

It can sound strange but winter and early spring on Lake Baikal offer many more opportunities for travelers than summer time. A great number of remote areas become accessible thanks to the ice of Baikal that covers the lake from the mid of January to the last weeks of April. One can travel for days on this huge ice shell on foot or skies, skates, snowmobiles, ice boats or whatever.

Munku-Sardyk ascent

Vast areas of Lake Baikal have remained basically untouched due to its rough terrain. Gorgeous mountain ranges bound the lake from all sides. The most impressive of all are the East Sayan Mountains that stretch south from Lake Baikal with Munku Sardyk mount being the utmost summit in the whole Baikal region. It stands right on the Russian Mongolian border overlooking both countries from the height of 3491 m. This is the world of glaciers, stormy winds and fascinating landscape.

Winter Coctail

Being the largest freshwater basin on Earth Lake Baikal is too cold to offer a good swimming season. One of the few places where the water gets really warm is the so called “Warm Lake” located in Snezhnaya river valley just 6 km away from the Big Sea. In Summer time this area is overcrowded with people but already in the second half of September it becomes lonely and in the mid of October you expect the first snowfalls. And as soon as they have started they never stop.
